FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PSI OPENS BARGE LOADING FACILITY

Prestress Services has completed construction of a barge loading facility that can load products weighing up to 300-tons. This facility is on the Ohio River at our Melbourne, Kentucky plant just east of Cincinnati. The structure, which is elevated above flood stage of the river, is constructed
using 24” prestressed concrete pilings and 42”x48” prestressed box girders which were fabricated in-house. The use of precast provided a low-maintenance solution with far greater speed of construction and longevity than the steel alternatives. Precast saved hundreds of thousands of dollars on material costs over steel and was quickly fabricated.

Our Melbourne facility now has the capability to offer economical river transportation of bridge products, pilings, and fabricated precast or prestressed components. Using two Mi-Jack 150-ton travelifts, we can load materials directly into all types of barges, eliminating the need for costly crane rentals.

In July and August of 2008 we successfully loaded over 60 precast lock walls weighing 270 tons each for the McAlpine Lock and Dam project in Louisville. McAlpine Lock and Dam is being built by TGM Constructors, a joint-venture of Traylor Brothers, Massman Construction, and Granite Construction.

In addition to loading our own products, our pier is available for handling all types of heavy cargo and can transfer from rail, truck, or barge.
